#MuseumFromHome: Turn old t-shirts into yarn

Cleaning out your closet? Take something old and make it new. Learn how to turn your used t-shirts into yarn.

All you need is any size t-shirts that you don’t mind cutting up and a pair of scissors. A variety of t-shirt colours means multicoloured yarn! Once your t-shirt yarn is created, you can do any number of things – weaving, braiding, crocheting, macramé, and more. If you have cardboard handy, you can make a cardboard loom to create small weaving projects. Let us know if you give t-shirt yarn a try! In January, with the support of the Chawkers Foundation, the Museum held it’s first Sustainable Textile Teach-in. A part of our monthly Textile Teach-in program, these sustainable workshops allow participants to explore sustainable textiles practices—from up-cycling materials to repairing clothing, and everything in between.

The Museum is currently closed to the public but we’re still offering Textile Teach-ins…digitally! In April, we co-hosted our first virtual workshop with Works-in-Progress on repurposing wool sweaters. In May we’ll be hosting artist Liz Pead who will share her practice working with found materials.
