Join us for a stimulating evening in collaboration with Black Artists’ Networks in Dialogue (BAND) as we delve into the world of quilting with a special screening of the documentary The Quiltmakers of Gee’s Bend. This captivating film traces the legacy and artistry of the African American artists from Gee’s Bend, Alabama, whose distinctive quilts have garnered international acclaim for their bold designs and rich cultural history. Notably, the quilters of Gee’s Bend have left an unforgettable mark on African Nova Scotian quilt making, with a particularly significant influence on the Vale Quilters, prominently featured in the current exhibition titled The Secret Codes. The inception of the Vale Quilters can be traced back to a transformative visit by Mary Bedolph and Louisiana Pettway of the famed Gee’s Bend Quiltmakers of Alabama to New Glasgow, NS, in 2007.
