Online Presentation: Printed Textiles from Kinngait Studios Curator’s Talk

General $20, Students $10 , Members Free

We are pleased to partner with the Canadian Society of Decorative Arts in presenting a curator’s talk on the exhibition Printed Textiles from Kinngait Studios.

Curatorial Lead Roxane Shaughnessy will speak about the little-known story of a group of Inuit artists and printmakers who produced a collection of graphic textiles in Kinngait, (Cape Dorset, Nunavut) in the 1950s and 60s – a period of social change that disrupted traditional language and relationships to the land. Learn about the evolution and impact of this textile initiative on Inuit graphic arts and explore its legacy through the work of Inuit fashion designers working today. See images of these captivating fabrics, and experience this important and previously unrecognized artistic legacy of the Kinngait artists and printmakers.

Roxane Shaughnessy leads the development and research of the Museum’s permanent collection of over 15,000 textiles and manages the digital assets. She has over twenty years of experience curating exhibitions from the collection, most recently Printed Textiles from Kinngait (Cape Dorset) Studios (2019), and Ancestry and Artistry: Maya Textiles from Guatemala (2013). She holds a Master of Arts in anthropology and previously held positions at the Royal Ontario Museum and as President of the Textile Society of America, and is the recipient of a Curatorial Writing award from the Ontario Association of Art Galleries.

You will receive an email with the Zoom meeting access link prior to the event. Please email Leah Sanchez at lsanchez@textilemuseum.ca for any questions or concerns.
