The Lion King of Mali

This exhibition tells the story of the great West African kingdoms from the 3rd to the 16th centuries through a selection of masterful cloths, ritual garments and beadwork, and shows how their power and beauty inform contemporary African textiles.

To celebrate Black History Month in February, 2006, the Textile Museum of Canada presents an exhibition that takes the visitor on a journey from West Africa to North America, tracing the histories of the magnificent Medieval African empires of Ghana, Mali and Songhay through textile traditions and innovations.
