This hands-on workshop introduces participants to the art and logic of surface pattern design through the lens of textile traditions. Participants will learn how repeating motifs give fabric rhythm—how small units, when structured thoughtfully, express flow, balance, and harmony.
No prior experience is required, and materials are provided. This class provides a supportive, beginner-friendly environment to build a foundation in pattern and textile surface design!
Each participant will leave with a repeat tile and one or two design variations, with opportunities to explore additional repeats or variations and translate it to textile surface and pattern design.
This session will cover:
- Motif design and development for fabric
- Translating motifs into a basic repeat structure
- Exploring cultural contexts in motif design
