Red Dress Pin Beading Workshop (Beginner)

These felt pins are more than just a beadwork project; they serve as a ceremony of recognition for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit people (MMIWG2S). In this workshop participants learn about the significance of the red dress while learning to edge bead their own pin. With ceremonial tobacco in their left hand, participants are invited to include the sacred medicine within their work. Through this meaningful act, the pins transform into symbols of remembrance, healing, and respect, while also embodying a commitment to care and education when worn.
No prior experience is required, and materials are provided. This class provides a supportive, beginner-friendly environment.

Facilitator Bio:
Marissa Magneson is a Cree-Métis artist, photographer, educator, and workshop facilitator with Red River roots. She holds a BFA (Hons.) and a Master’s in Indigenous Studies, with a particular focus on beadwork as visual storytelling. Her creative and academic work is centered on themes of decolonizing education, strengthening community, and reclaiming cultural practices. Marissa actively collaborates with a wide range of organizations through educational initiatives, photography, consulting, and various creative projects. In 2024 she was recognized as one of York University’s Top 30 Alumni Under 30 and ranked 2nd nationally as a 2023 Vanier Scholar. Marissa is currently a PhD candidate at York University where she is researching “Beadwork as Pedagogy,” while developing educational bundles in which she mobilizes in classrooms throughout the GTA. Alongside her studies, she teaches, freelances, and sells her art. Marissa is inspired by the legacy of her maternal Métis grandmother, Elaine Jessop (Desjarlais), whose lifelong advocacy for Indigenous women’s rights continues to drive her own work.
