Tatreez Workshop with Nina Rafique
General: $35
Member: $30
Join us to discover tatreez, a Palestinian embroidery tradition, in this hands-on workshop! After discussing the historical significance of tatreez with Palestinian pieces on display in the Made by Many exhibition, we will learn to use waste canvas to embroider traditional motifs drawn from those pieces onto personal clothing items or accesories. Please note that participants are required to bring their own clothing piece or accessory to embroider on! Tote bags, bucket hats, cotton scarves, denim jackets— any item works as long as it’s made of a lighter weight, non-stretch material and both sides of the fabric are accessible.
This class will be taught by Nina Rafique. Rafique is a Palestinian-Pakistani textile artist and researcher passionate about reconnecting to traditional art forms in the diaspora. She teaches workshops on Palestinian embroidery, or tatreez, across the GTA. Currently, she is researching Palestinian dresses and veils at the Textile Museum of Canada, where she recently led tours of the Palestinian collection in partnership with Toronto Palestine Film Festival.
This is a beginner workshop open to all ages and abilities; thread, needles, patterns and waste canvas will be provided. Participants are required to bring their own clothing piece or accessory to embroider on.
