Admission by donation.
Join us to discover tatreez, a Palestinian embroidery tradition, in this hands-on workshop! Learn to use waste canvas to embroider designs on an accessory or clothing piece of your choice as we discover the cultural history of four tatreez motifs, and the importance of tatreez to Palestinian identity.
This class will be taught by Visitor Experience Salesperson Nina Rafique. Nina is a Palestinian-Pakistani embroiderer passionate about reconnecting to traditional art forms in the diaspora.
You will learn:
- Tatreez cross-stitch technique
- How to use waste canvas to apply tatreez designs to a base textile
- The cultural significance of tatreez to Palestinian identity
This is a beginner workshop open to all ages and abilities; thread, needles, and waste canvas will be provided. Participants are required to bring their own clothing piece or other base textile to embroider on.
Suggested embroidery bases include: hats (bucket hats or baseball caps), cotton or silk scarves, tote bags, shirt pockets, or anything else made of light weight, embroidery-friendly fabric.
Space is limited, registration is required.
