Lecture: Silk Roads and Silk Shoes with Elizabeth Semmelhack
Wednesday May 25, 6:30 pm
During the 18th century, upper-class women at both ends of the “Silk Road” wore delicate silk shoes. The silk “lotus shoes” worn by Han Chinese women rivaled the silk high heels of European women in sumptuousness. Despite the many miles that separated Europe and China, the use of silk for footwear had striking commonalities. Join Elizabeth Semmelhack, Senior Curator of the Bata Shoe Museum, as she explores the meanings of silk shoes in the 18th century in these two cultures.

Free for TMC Members and Full-time students, Non-members $15. Advance tickets may be purchased in person at the TMC’s front desk. Please arrive early, seating is limited.
