Bukhara features a collection of Central Asian ikats and embroidered silks — coats, veils, wall hangings and coverlets from the Textile Museum’s permanent collection — to visualize the Bukhara region’s rich textile history and place it within the diverse cultural traditions of Asia.

Lecture: Silk Roads and Silk Shoes with Elizabeth Semmelhack

During the 18th century, upper-class women at both ends of the “Silk Road” wore delicate silk shoes. The silk “lotus shoes” worn by Han Chinese women rivaled the silk high heels of European women in sumptuousness. Despite the many miles that separated Europe and China, the use of silk for footwear had striking commonalities. Join Elizabeth Semmelhack, Senior Curator of the Bata Shoe Museum, as she explores the meanings of silk shoes in the 18th century in these two cultures.

2-Day Workshop: Silk Screen Geometric Patterns with Sharon Epstein
Saturday July 23 and Sunday July 24, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm
Join local artist Sharon Epstein for an exploration of creating geometric patterns using silk screen techniques. Participants will visit the exhibitions Silk Oasis on the Silk Road: Bukhara and Magic Squares: The Patterned Imagination of Muslim Africa in Contemporary Culture for inspiration for their designs, and do extensive hands-on work in the studio. Co-presented with the Contemporary Textile Studio Co-op.
