Quiltmaking with the Vale Quilters of New Glasgow
Join the members of the Vale Quilters for a full-day introductory quilting workshop as part of the opening weekend of The Secret Codes. Participants will be using appliqué techniques to create a 12” square that they could choose to be part of a larger community quilt that will be in progress throughout the run of the exhibition. Participants will be able to select from traced patterns prepared by the artists, or bring their own pattern or freestyle as they wish.
All skill levels and ages are welcome – no prior experience necessary. All materials are provided. Class size is limited; registration is required.
This program is generously supported by the Canada Council of the Arts Jean A. Chalmers Fund for the Crafts.
The Vale Quilters was organized after a visit by Mary Bedolph and Louisiana Pettway of the famed Gees Bend Quiltmakers of Alabama to New Glasgow NS in 2007. The association sponsors talks and workshops on African Nova Scotian quiltmaking traditions and has created popular exhibitions of their quilts including Learning to Fly (2008) and The Secret Codes (2011 to 2023).
