Portraits of Care: A Mother’s Day Workshop (Beginner)
Saturday, May 9 | 1-4 PM
$40 | General
$30 | Textile Museum Members
Includes General Admission
Inspired by nurturing figures, this workshop invites participants to create a stitched portrait honouring a mother or chosen caregiver. Using scrap fabric, reclaimed textiles, and up-cycled beads, participants will embroider and appliqué this portrait. It is encouraged to embroider repetitive, rhythmic stitches, symbolizing the steady, everyday acts of care that support and sustain us. These repeated marks serve as metaphors for constancy, protection, and the quiet generosity through which nurturing figures give what they have, so others may thrive. Embellishments may be added to personalize each portrait, creating a tactile tribute crafted from meaningful materials.
Participants are also encouraged to bring a small, meaningful object connected to their mother or chosen nurturing figure, such as costume jewelry, beads, or another small item, that can be incorporated into their portrait.
Throughout the session we will explore:
- Embroidery and Appliqué techniques by incorporating scrap fabric, repetitive embroidery patterns, and embellishing using beads
- This workshop explores upcycling and designing textile surfaces while creating a meaningful art piece.
