In this workshop, led by The Biyuti Project research team members Jubelle Paa and Chloe Panaligan and joined by several artists from the exhibition, you will create your own pamaypay as a functional art piece of self-expression using material from the TMC’s Reuse Program and elements from Filipino/x material culture.

During Spanish colonial rule, the pamaypay became a symbol of modesty and propriety for Catholic women, often used to veil emotions and communicate discreetly in a society governed by strict religious norms. In queer and trans Filipinx culture, the pamaypay has been reclaimed as a tool of flamboyance, performance, and resistance—its dramatic flair celebrated in festivals and drag, transforming a symbol of repression into one of pride, identity, and liberation. Adorn your own pamaypay in this hands-on and interactive workshop and even try performing with it!

The Biyuti Project is an arts-based research project exploring queer and trans Filipinx youth experiences as former Ontario Catholic school students through art production and storytelling workshops.
