Living in Afghanistan celebrates the rich and diverse Islamic and pre-Islamic cultures of the Afghan people. Afghanistan is a multicultural society consisting of many ethnic groups, yet these remarkable cultures remain largely unknown to the rest of the world especially in the wake of recent conflicts. This 2002 exhibition unveils “invisible Afghanistan” through clothing, rugs, textiles and other artifacts that reflect historic and contemporary ways of life.

Afghanistan is a multicultural society consisting of many ethnic groups, including the Pashtun, Hazara, Uzbek, Tajik, Turkmen, Kirghiz and Belouch peoples. Unfortunately, these remarkable cultures remain largely unknown to the rest of the world, especially in the wake of the recent conflict in Afghanistan. Rarely is there an opportunity to learn about the people behind the headlines.
Living in Afghanistan celebrates the rich and diverse Islamic and pre-Islamic cultures of the Afghan people. The exhibition features more than 100 artifacts from the Textile Museum of Canada’s permanent collection and private donors.
