Kai Chan: A Walk in the WildernessKai Chan

Kai Chan’s artworks reflect his personal journey, from his early life in Hong Kong and China to his current home in Toronto. Chan’s materials, which include toothpicks, incense sticks, wood shavings and burnt wood, may seem far removed from traditional textile artifacts; however, the artist suggests that these materials – like thread – can be woven, interlaced and sewn in very similar ways. This 2004 exhibition investigates the significance of these materials in relation to Chan’s personal identity, and how we are shaped through environments, rituals, space and time.
