Introduction to Tatreez Workshop
Wednesday, November 25 | 1-4 PM
$40 | General
$30 | Textile Museum Members
Join us to discover tatreez, a Palestinian embroidery tradition, in this hands-on workshop! After discussing the historical significance of tatreez with Palestinian pieces on display in the Made by Many and Retracing Tatreez exhibitions, we will learn to use waste canvas to embroider traditional motifs drawn from those pieces onto personal clothing items or accessories. Please note that participants are required to bring their own clothing piece or accessory to embroider on! Tote bags, bucket hats, cotton scarves, denim jackets— any item works as long as it’s made of a lighter weight, non-stretch material and both sides of the fabric are accessible.
This class will be taught by Nina Rafique. Rafique is a Palestinian-Pakistani textile artist and researcher passionate about reconnecting to traditional art forms in the diaspora. She teaches workshops on Palestinian embroidery, or tatreez, across the GTA. Currently, she is the curator of Retracing Tatreez: Palestinian Thobes through the 20th Century at the Textile Museum, a showcase of her one year research project on Palestinian dresses and veils.
This is a beginner workshop open to all ages and abilities; thread, needles, patterns and waste canvas will be provided. Participants are required to bring their own clothing piece or accessory to embroider on.
Please contact Isabelle Sain (isain@textilemuseum.ca) for any questions or accessibility accommodations.
This workshop was made possible with thanks to Ontario Arts Council.
