This collaborative exhibition features recent artwork in a range of media by 19 artists who examine physical, formal and conceptual aspects of cloth’s fragility, its tendency to deteriorate, and the human inclination to rebuild and restore. Frayed cloth speaks of wear and tear, and damaged cast-offs and unwanted remnants are metaphors for the evidence of use and the passage of time. Memories are inscribed in worn fabric, registering its history, strains, stresses, and exposure to the elements.

These artists’ somewhat irreverent approaches to the creation of their work often involve the physical dismantling of existing objects, while reconstituting the fabric to generate new forms and new expressions. Textile materials, personal and cultural narratives, politics and nature combine to loosen the bonds of convention and restraints imposed by traditional systems of order.
