Felt is both a material and a process; it is an ancient, non-woven fabric that forms when moisture and pressure combine over animal fur and fleece to create a dense mesh of interlocking fibres. This 1999 exhibition brings together a selection of objects representing history and mythology, from the fur trade to popular culture. Alongside these objects are artworks created specifically for the project by five Canadian artists; each of whom uses experimental approaches in working with state-of-the-art industrial felt to create new work with the intention of revealing a range of material characteristics and social meanings.
