Special Announcement from the Textile Museum of Canada Board

Destinations: A Work by Barbara LayneBarbara Layne

In Destinations, Barbara Layne transformed the floor of the gallery into a large map inlaid with objects modelled in wax. These objects were inexact replicas of articles from the Textile Museum’s collection. Referring to distant sites, the objects questioned the relocation of “artifact,” and how change in context affects change in meaning. Destinations engaged the viewer to explore place and identity, the nature of collecting and the functions of the museum.

The exhibition points inwards toward contemporary Western traditions, and at the same time, points outwards toward different cultures and time periods around the world.
