Get powwow ready with us at our free Mending Station workshop facilitated by designer and traditional artist Jeanine “Jin” Maiangowi-Manatch!
Bring your regalia that needs mending and adjustments or create a mini star quilt to mend and adorn your everyday garments with Jeanine “Jin” Maiangowi-Manatch. Jin is an Odawa (Wiikwemkoong) and Algonquin (Mitchikanibikok Inik) designer, traditional artist and facilitator based in Akwesasne. Jin’s work spans traditional clothing, dressmaking, leatherwork, beadwork, weaving, and ribbon work. This is a great opportunity to visit, laugh, and learn regalia mending and quilt techniques with Jin while she’s in town!
This workshop is for First Nations, Inuit and Métis participants.
The purpose of this Mending Station is to repair existing garments and extend the life of textile scraps. Participants do not need to bring regalia to attend. Participants should already be comfortable operating a sewing machine, as this workshop does not include beginner machine instructions. All materials for the quilt patch and mending are provided. Participants are welcome to bring material from their collection to use in this workshop.
The Mending Station is an Indigenous-led, public-facing repair and learning hub that centres garment mending as both a creative and sustainable practice. Each session will welcome up to 15 participants and is led by an invited textile artist or designer who brings their own practice, knowledge, and approach to repair into the space. This public program is an extension of the Museum’s exhibition: Always in Fashion, an engaging exploration of Indigenous design languages and their transformative impacts on the fashion landscape.
