Virtual In Conversation:  Nehal El-Hadi with Anna Torma and Sarah Quinton 

Join Nehal El-Hadi, Editor-in-Chief of Studio Magazine, artist Anna Torma, and Curatorial Director Sarah Quinton as they explore Torma’s solo exhibition Permanent Danger, currently on view at the Textile Museum of Canada.

Nehal El-Hadi is an editor, journalist and researcher based in Toronto. With over 15 years of writing and editing experience, Nehal’s interdisciplinary work has appeared in journalistic, academic, literary and art gallery publications, and is forthcoming in several anthologies and edited collections. Themes explored in her writing include the relationships between virtual and material spaces, the agency of digital objects, and gendered and racialised online experiences.  

Nehal has a Ph.D. in Planning from the University of Toronto and is a Visiting Scholar at York University’s City Institute. She has taught place-based writing courses at the University of Toronto Scarborough and creative non-fiction and poetry to community groups. 

 Anna Tormais the recipient of the 2020 Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts – Saidye Bronfman Award and is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. She is also a recipient of the New Brunswick Lieutenant-Governor’s Award for High Achievement in Visual Arts, and the Strathbutler Award from the Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation.   

Tormhas been producing large-scale hand embroidered wall hangings and collages since graduating with a degree in Textile Art and Design from the Hungarian University of Applied Arts, Budapest, in 1979. She immigrated to Canada in 1988 and now lives in BaieVerte, New Brunswick. 

Sarah Quinton is the Curatorial Director of the Textile Museum of Canada and is curator of Permanent Danger. Her curatorial practice focuses on intersections between contemporary textiles and sculpture, photography, design, and site-specific installations.
