In this 90 minute virtual Teach-In, Public Programming Assistant Allie Davis will teach participants how to repurpose long strips of fabric with rope-making techniques! Scraps from your fabric stash can be transformed into fabric yarn or twine, and used to make rugs, baskets, and more. Learn the basics of the technique with us, and start a new, sustainable project.

All skill levels and ages are welcome. Class size is limited, registration is required.

You will receive the Zoom meeting access info in a confirmation email upon registration for this program.

Type: Event

Date: Apr 6, 2022, 4pm - 5:30pm

Topics Covered:

  • Twine / Rope-Making with fabric scraps
  • How to create fabric yarn for crochet projects
  • Coiling (the basics of basketry)

You will need:

  • Scrap fabric (non-stretch)
    • You can pre-cut some pieces into 1-inch strips, or cut them during teach-in.
  • Fabric Scissors
  • If you’d like to try crochet with fabric strips, you’ll need a large crochet hook (11mm+)
  • If you’d like to try coiling, you’ll need string (crochet cotton, yarn, or hemp rope), and a needle. Curved upholstery needles are the best for this, but you can make do with a thick denim needle as well.
