Sustainable Textile Teach-In: Introduction to Hand Embroidery




Join Public Programming Assistant Cecily Ou as you learn basic hand embroidery techniques! You will be guided through ten different techniques to help you build a range of skills with a take-home exercise to help you practice. Techniques will include:

  • Running Stitch
  • Back Stitch
  • Straight Stitch
  • Stem Stitch
  • Satin Stitch
  • Chain Stitch
  • Detached Chain Stitch
  • Woven Wheel Stitch
  • French Knots


You will need:

  • Medium-sized fabric scraps (around 10 inches long, 10 inches wide)
  • Embroidery needles
  • Embroidery threads
  • Fabric Scissors
  • Embroidery hoops
  • Chalk or fabric pencil (optional)


No prior experience required.
