From Cloth to Code: New Media Responses

Featuring work by: Ali Phi, Arice, Connie Oreamuno, Cyrill Durigon, Joy Khalil, Kousha Motamedi, Roda Medhat, Wintana Hagos, and Zebv Diez

Across the Museum’s second floor, audiences are invited to explore the evolving history of our permanent collection and exhibitions, bridging today’s textile practices with those of the past. That collection of exhibitions marks an introspective chapter for the Museum, reflecting on the artworks we have collected, the artists and curators we have championed, and the textile traditions we have documented in analog forms. From Cloth to Code extends this reflection into the Museum’s 50th anniversary, pairing historical collection pieces with contemporary responses through new media.

Through the perspectives of nine Toronto-based artists, the exhibition reimagines textile heritage and practices using interactive technologies, sound installations, 3-D printed sculptures, animation, neon, and projections. Digitally rendered garments reinterpret the narratives embedded in historic fabrics, while 3D printed forms meditate on material decay and displacement. Interactive components invite viewers to design digital carpets, while immersive soundscapes trace over diasporic histories. Everyday objects such as rugs and combs are recontextualized to expose colonial legacies and their ongoing relevance.

Each artist approaches the Museum’s collection as both catalyst and collaborator, translating these literal threads of memory, identity, and material culture into digital form. With From Cloth to Code, the Museum embraces a new era of textile art, where the fabrics our collection transform into digital responses.
