Crafting Connections is a free workshop series developed by IC Contemporary, designed to provide accessible art-making opportunities for our Toronto community. Each iteration of this series explores a new medium, offering participants a full month of hands-on experience to develop artistic skills while fostering connections with fellow community members. This series not only equips participants with new creative techniques but also culminates in an exhibition of their work, creating a platform for emerging talent within Toronto’s art scene.

For the inaugural launch of Crafting Connections, IC Contemporary is partnering with the Textile Museum of Canada to host a month-long series of textile-focused workshops. Each week, a Toronto-based artist will lead participants through a workshop inspired by their artistic practice. In the first week, Akash Inbakumar will introduce the basic techniques of resist dyeing. Week two will feature Jana Ghalayini, who will guide participants in mixed media weaving. The final workshop will be led by Chason Yeboah, who will teach the creation of a basic 3D Amigurumi doll. The last week of the program is dedicated to creative experimentation, allowing participants time to complete and refine the pieces. The artworks created by participants will be installed alongside the artworks of the facilitators, in the pop-up showcase located on the second floor (in the former gift shop space).

This free, four-week program runs from September 11th to September 27th, with sessions held every Wednesday and Friday from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Textile Museum of Canada. Registration is free and open to individuals in Toronto who identify as low-income, immigrants, refugees, and/or newcomers who are looking to build community and grow within the arts. Registration is now open!

IC Contemporary extends heartfelt gratitude to the Textile Museum of Canada for hosting this debut launch of Crafting Connections and to the Toronto Arts Council for their generous support in funding this project. IC Contemporary (ICC) is a Toronto based art collective that utilizes online and in-person art programming to support emerging and under-represented artists through exhibitions, artist talks, and community programming. As a collective dedicated to supporting the arts through an intersectional lens, our programs aim to promote gender equality, platform under-represented voices, create accessible and inclusive spaces, and breakdown socio-economic barriers within the arts communities.
