Educators! Join us in person or virtually on Wednesday, October 26 for an invigorating evening connecting as learners. Take a guided tour of the exhibition ᑕᑯᒃᓴᐅᔪᒻᒪᕆᒃ Double Vision, presented in partnership with Toronto Biennial of Art (TBA) on now at the Museum through March 2023. We will also be hosting a short hands-on studio activity in the Textile Learning Hub in connection with the tour!
TBA continues to promote land-based learning and kinship with one another through contemporary art. Engage with the TBA’s Ontario Curriculum supportive Mobile Arts Curriculum learning tools.
ᑕᑯᒃᓴᐅᔪᒻᒪᕆᒃ Double Vision is an exhibit of Inuit Textile Art by matriarch Jessie Oonark, and her daughters Janet Kigusiuq and Victoria Mamnguqsualuk. The exhibit looks deeply at the applique and embroidery works, or Nivingajuliat wall hangings by Jessie Oonark and the seamstresses of the Qamani’tuaq (Baker Lake) community. Matriarchal practices and how women artists in Qamani’tuaq mentored one another in producing unique aesthetic and conceptual lineages are centred. This program draws on links to the Social Studies, History and Geography and Expressions of First Nations, Métis and Inuit Cultures in the Ontario Curriculum, and also supports Arts and Culture, History and Textile post-secondary programs!
