Opening Reception: Body & Head

Join us for the opening reception of Body & Head on October 28th between 5 PM - 7:30 PM. The exhibition will be open October 28 - November 12 2026.

In collaboration with Hibla PH and the Philippine Consulate General – Toronto, the Textile Museum of Canada is thrilled to be hosting Body & Head, a showcase of textile traditions from eight Indigenous and ethnolinguistic communities in the Philippines. The exhibition explores how clothing and adornment express identity, status, and collective memory.

The Body section features four blankets from the Tinguian, Ilocano, and Meranaw communities. In these works, the textile becomes an embrace, not only a literal wrapping of the body, but a metaphor for personal and communal identity. The Tinguian binandera, with its bold linear component, evokes strong ancestral continuity; the two Ilocano sinukitan reflects the resilience, sophistication, and sharp precision of northern weaving traditions, as well as respect to heirloom motifs; while the Meranaw balud, adorned with vibrant geometries and stylized okir motifs, signifies royalty, festivity, and cultural pride.

The Head section highlights four headscarves from the Tagabawa-Bagobo, Manobo, Tausug, and Tboli peoples, each with rich ceremonial and everyday textile practices. Often intricately woven, tie-dyed, or embroidered, these headscarves are far more than functional garments; they serve as powerful markers of social belonging, gender roles, ritual practice, and regional aesthetics. Among the Tagabawa-Bagobo, the headscarf plays a role in symbolic rites; among the Manobo, complex patterns are passed down through generations; among the Tausug, masters of tapestry weaving, traditional patterns adapted to modern sensibilities; and for the Tboli known as “dreamweavers,” textile creation, even in their simplest work, is deeply entwined with social norms and belief systems.

Together, these eight pieces invite us to ask: How do we wear our identity? What stories do our fabrics carry? In a nation as archipelagic and culturally diverse as the Philippines, cloth becomes a living archive, threaded with memory, kinship, and cosmology.

Body & Head is more than an exhibition of artifacts form Mindanao and northern Luzon; it is an invitation to see textiles as a way of being rooted in land, sustained by hands, and worn across generations.
