Taking Shape: Recent Acquisitions

Spotlighting new works that expand representation in our collection by Aria Xyx, Arnulfo Mendoza Oaxca, Cristina Brasil Casagrande, Feliciana Bautista, Gabriel Oaxca, Ida Karpik, Jane Kidd, Jontay Kahm, José Miguel Ramirez, Mario Gomez, Miguel Angel Sosme, Orlando Dugi, Samuel Nnorom, and Xaneri Damian.

As we reflect on the scale and scope of the Textile Museum of Canada’s collection, one that spans more than 200 global regions and over 15,000 objects, we recognize both its depth and continued evolution. With each new acquisition, the collection takes shape as a dynamic assemblage of global textile and cultural practices. Yet, even amid growth, we acknowledge the gaps that remain, and the ongoing work of building a collection that better reflects the diversity of textile arts and artists.

Taking Shape: Recent Acquisitions features a selection of artworks the Museum added to its permanent collection between 2023 and 2025. In response to a series of recommendations from our communities, these pieces actively fill absences in the areas of Indigenous textile practices, contemporary art and fashion from Turtle Island and beyond, and art that speaks to LGBTQ2S+ experiences.

These recent acquisitions represent a commitment to making space for communities who have been absent from or underrepresented in the Museum’s collection. With each new addition, our collection will never stop taking shape, continually adapting to reflect the human experience through the textiles.
