All the boys reply at once, "His mother’s over there, and I hear she makes her tamales with deer."
"It’s the Ajaw’s deer, but he won’t miss one will he?"
"He and the court can’t eat them all..."
"Don’t breathe a word of this though or we won’t see your friend’s mother again, or her wonderful stews and tamales."

The boys are so friendly you finally get up the courage to ask them, "What’s a tamale?"
"You don’t know what a tamale is? What do you eat in Teotihuacan? Lizard?" The boys think you are making a joke. They laugh and sing, "Lizard, lizard, twenty bugs and a gizzard!"
