As you think about how imposing the crocodile head makes him look, it occurs to you again that, while you still don't know why, you can understand ancient Mayan words. You realize that the name of this place, Lamanai, actually means "submerged crocodile". You turn away from the seated Lord to look towards the shimmering lagoon that the city was built beside and imagine that it must be full of crocodiles. Maybe the people here identified with the crocodile as some kind of civic mascot! You turn back towards the Lord and notice that there is a line of people in front of him, bearing bundles of cloth, ceramic vessels, and other gifts as some kind of tribute.

You keep going, looking for the tamale stall run by the family of the man who sent you on this errand.
