WHO: Culture group associated with the Zacatecas region of West Mexico
WHERE: Probably north-eastern Jalisco, West Mexico
WHEN: Early Classic Period, A.D. 200 - 300
WHAT: The male half of this pair of ceramic figures is seated while playing a drum and possibly singing. He is depicted with facial tattooing or paint, with a projecting headdress or hairstyle. The woman associated with the man seems also to be singing, with hands placed about the waist. In the same fashion as the male, her skin is shown to be decorated. Both figures are shown wearing substantial earrings and are typical of the Zacatecas region.
Height: male 34.6cm; female 34cm.
HOW: Coil-built and hand-modelled buff earthenware, highly burnished polychrome slip decoration.
