WHERE: North coast, Peru

WHEN: Early Intermediate Period/Middle Horizon, A.D. 500-700

WHAT: This Moche ceramic portrait is of a male, likely of considerable importance. We do not know who he was, but he was not a deity. He was a real person, who almost certainly lived in the Chicama, Moche, or Viru valley, sometime around A.D. 500-700.

HOW: Mould-made with cream-coloured slip on body with red slip painted details.
