Tripod vase - Maya (Before A.D. 1520)

WHERE: Belize

WHEN: Early Classic Period, A.D. 495-544

WHAT: Tripod vase with rattle feet and rattle projections. The vessel originally had a lid, which is missing. Incised on the vessel and highlighted with red pigment is a highly stylized otherworldly creature. The vessel interior provides evidence of heavy use or cleaning in ancient times.
Height: 21cm

HOW: Hand-formed earthenware with incised decoration; polychrome decoration over black slip; stucco applied to rim and basal edge.
