WHAT: Fragment depicting a cloven-hoofed deer with antlers. Deer sometimes symbolized the wild and untamed to coastal peoples, as they regarded deer as the opposites of the domesticated camelids. The Moche, an earlier coastal culture, often depicted the hunting and sacrificing of deer as a symbol for military combat and capture.
Fragment Height: 8 cm
HOW: Plain weave ground cloth; cotton warp and weft, supplementary camelid weft.
