WHAT: This Chimú blackware bottle depicts a cat with spotted markings. Felines were important to many Andean cultures, especially jaguars. This vessel may portray a jaguar or perhaps a smaller spotted cat, such as an ocelot or margay. The ceramic artist who made this vessel may never have seen a real cat, as the ears on this one are rather large and round.
HOW: Mould-made earthenware; smoke-fired.
