WHAT: Head-cloth, resist dyed, consisting of two panels sewn together. The resist dying technique produced the circular design seen here. The smaller circles were created by tying an area of the cloth around a seedbefore dyeing. The larger portion of the circle was likely created not through tying, but with a resist material such as a gum or wax. Areas that were tied off or otherwise protected would not absorb dyes. Repeated dying, leaving some parts covered and others exposed, produced this design.

HOW: Plain weave; cotton warp and weft threads. Resist dyed.
