Carnival Mask Making: Teach-in & Building Brazilian Carnaval (Beginner)
Saturday, February 28, 1:00 – 4:00 PM
$35 ($25 for Textile Museum Members)
Join us this Carnaval at the Textile Museum to create your own Carnival inspired mask while learning about the cultural and historical contexts of Brazilian carnival mask making with Elisa Penha.
This workshop will provide a beginner-friendly tutorial to the making of a mask for Brazilian Carnaval, decorating with fabrics, plumes, and ribbons, while doubling as a teach-in on the colonial origins of Carnaval and its subsequent reclamation by Samba schools, the Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous diasporas. Elise is interested in fostering community with Torontonians as well as Brazilian Canadians, to spotlight the often sidelined yet large, and vibrant Brazilian diaspora in Canada.
No previous experience is required; everyone will leave with a finished piece.
What we’ll cover:
- The colonial origins of Carnaval, its traditions and its reclamation by samba schools and the Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous diasporas.
- Storytelling through mask making.
- Mask designed with techniques like beading, sculpting, collaging, sequin, and fabric embellishing.
